There's not a lot of information about Handmade Films/Ilion Animation Studios' co-production of Planet One, but what is out there looks plenty interesting. Variety claims it's written by Joe Stillman (Shrek) and directed by Jorge Blanco, who was the lead animator for the video game series Commandos.
According to the film's official site, Planet One is a send-up of alien invasion movies from the 1950's. There are some promo pics which you can have a look at. From what I've seen, they're looking pretty sharp. If the rest of the film looks this good, and the script lives up to its potential, Planet One could be a groovy little animated flick.
Here's the official synopsis, as taken from Ilion's site:
"On Planet One, the locals have two antenna, eight fingers and tons of fear about alien invaders. They live in a world like our suburban 1950’s, with sci-fi flicks, gory comic books and paranoid army generals barking about monsters from outer space.
"A young inhabitant of Planet One, Lem, thinks that space can be wonderful, but he lacks the courage to even move out of his parents’ basement. Then one day, out of the sky, an alien ship appears with something funny written on it: NASA. It is piloted by astronaut and ladies man, Captain Russ Baker. Russ had expected to plant the American Flag on a barren planet, only to land at someone’s backyard barbecue.
"Now Captain Russ Baker’s new friend, Lem, must keep him safe from the fearful authorities and help him recover his confiscated ship to get back home."
Planet One is aiming for a Christmas 2008 or early 2009 release.
Fun Fact: Handmade Films was originally created by former Beatles guitarist George Harrison in 1979 to finance the Monty Python feature film Life of Brian. Canadian company Paragon Entertainment bought Handmade Films in 1994. Since then, they're released only one film: 1998's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
